debate marks another high-stakes moment in the campaign. the romney-ryan team is hoping to hang on to its new momentum, while the obama-biden camp is trying to win it back. that left all of the pressure on the number two's today, as the hours counted down. the candidates were sounding upbeat, ahead of their face-off at centre college in danville, kentucky. vice president joe biden departed his home state of delaware today for the debate. >> i'm looking forward to it. >> woodruff: the republican vice presidential nominee, wisconsin congressman paul ryan, arrived yesterday. >> feel good about it. >> woodruff: but the public show of confidence belied the tension, as several new national polls show ryan's running mate, governor romney, with a slight lead, though within the margin of error. that made what happens on the stage tonight, even more critical. president obama called his vice president to wish him luck today, and voiced support for his man last night, in an interview on abc news. >> i think joe just needs to be joe. >> woodruff: and mitt romney played up ryan's chances, at a wednesd

the romney-ryan ticket for making this an issue. >> woodruff: the vice president, in turn, charged it was ryan who was stretching the truth. >> with all due respect, that's a bunch of malarkey. in fact... >> and why is that so? >> because not a single thing he said is accurate. first of all... >> be specific. >> i will be very specific. number one, the... this lecture on embassy security-- the congressman here cut embassy security in his budget by $300 million below what we asked for, number one. so much for the embassy security piece. >> woodruff: today, romney and other republicans pounced on the biden remarks. >> there were more questions that came out of last night because the vice president directly contradicted the sworn testimony of state department officials. he... he's doubling down on denial. >> woodruff: but at the white house, presidential press secretary jay carney said the vice president was correct in what he said. >> he was speaking directly for himself and for the president. he meant the white house and as is, of course, appropriate, these kinds of issues are handl

take away, paul ryan spent his dae by the time talking about mitt romney. joe biden spent his debate time talking about joe biden and that's the different. the goal of a vice-presidential debate do no harm and promote the guy on the top job and pretty clear that joe biden thinks he should have the top job. stuart: and a clear question, going into the debate the romney camp clearly had momentum. do you think that debate stopped that forward momentum for the romney camp? >> i really don't. let's say that the snap polls you cited earlier and that joe biden won going away. i don't concede that fact, if it is true, 1988 probably the best performance of a vice-presidential nominee, lloyd benson and george w. bush still won 40 states. and the vice-presidential debate is not really all that impactful to the overall trajectory of the campaign and i think that paul ryan did a good enough job and did enough to promote mitt romney and really mitt romney the person and joe biden admitted that mitt romney is a good man and i think that's what had to come out of debate and paul ryan did what he nee

've got a florida district. how is medicare reform, the ryan plan, romney plan, how is it playing in your district? >> it's playing well because we have an open line of communications and no change for our current seniors or anyone of 55 years of age about to become a senior, one of the things that no one is talking about is just last week monday, another new provision of the affordable care act took effect on our seniors and our hospitals which says that any senior that returns to a hospital within a 30 day period, that hospital will receive a fine. so, think about the position that you're putting our hospitals in. think about the position you're putting our seniors in with the reimbursable rates out of cms and health and human services administration getting lower and lower and many doctors that are dropping their seniors off with medicare coverage. as you well know, this was something that we were told the affordable care act was 940 billion and now it's up to 1.7 trillion. stuart: they're going to come back at you and say it's about your system. they're going to replace this basic rig
